Balance exercise: standing on different stairs

72 years old male with left hemiplegia due to CVA

1. The patient was asked to maintain his balance while standing with his strong leg on a higher stair. In this posture, most of the weight is on his plegic leg, and his base of support is relatively narrow, which makes it hard to maintain balance.

2. The PT instructs the patient to let go of the handrails, to increase level of difficulty. The patient loses his balance, and grabs the right handrail for control.

3. As time passes, it gets harder for him to keep an upright posture.
