Reciprocal movement and hand position

Updated: Jun 1, 2020

6 years old CP patient with LT hemiplegia.

Patient was asked to climb the stairs reciprocally. In order to encourage him to use his left hand and work symmetrically with his body, patient was instructed to use the handrails

1. PT assists the patient to position his left hand on the handrail and move it with the rest of his body while he climbs the stairs. By doing so, the PT helps his entire body's coordination, and prevents him from neglecting his left side.

2. When the patient descends the stairs, he keeps forgetting his left hand behind and needs the PT to correct him. This again, helps his entire body coordination, and prevents him from neglecting his left side.

A special thanks to the "Ha'gan Ha'shikumi" and their amazing staff, for sharing their knowledge, thoughts and experience.
